Oil
Arctic Thaw or New Great Game of the North?
The Arctic is often regarded as a promising area for oil and gas production, harbouring the word's last conventional undiscovered oil and gas reserves. In a world with a growing appetite for energy and scarcer resources, developing the Arctic's hydrocarbons seems like a logical step forward. But there will be no rapid 'colonisation' of the Arctic, rather modest development of its hydrocarbons, mainly in Russia. Meanwhile the delimitation of maritime borders between some Arctic states remains an issue and there is a noticeable increase in military activities.
